Precision Investigative Techniques
Teaming a borescope with impulse radar equipment enabled Construction Technology Laboratories' investigators to accurately pinpoint randomly located voids in load-bearing grouted concrete masonry walls.
During a recent investigation to identify unfilled grout cavities, engineers discovered that voids occurred at random locations in the walls. To be absolutely sure that all voids would be discovered and repaired, two investigative techniques were used.
First, CTL engineers used the impulse radar apparatus to scan each core area designated to contain grout and identify suspect locations. To quantify their findings they drilled V-in. holes at selected suspect locations in the walls. "With the aid of a fiber optic borescope we investigated the size and shape of the unfilled cavity and determined locations for grout injection ports," stated Jake Ribar, Principal Masonry Research Engineer. "The borescope provides us with a view of the interior of the wall three feet continued on page 34
