New Canada Masonry Centre Complex
Through letters of interest, 34 Architectural firms indicated their intention to offer the services of their firm for the design of a new proposed Canada Masonry Centre. Letters were received from firms in British Columbia and Ontario and the Building Committee reviewed all entries. After considerable deliberation the selection was made of three firms to proceed to the initial phase of the programme.
The Architectural firms of Douglas Cardinal Architects Ltd., A. J. Diamond, Donald Schmitt & Co., and Sievenpiper Associates Inc. are now working on conceptual proposals for the property in Mississauga which eventually will house the Canadian Masonry Contractors Association, The Clay Brick Association of Canada and the National Concrete Products Association (Concrete brick & Block) along with a Trades Training Centre for pre-apprentices and tradesmen retraining.
The property of approximately 1.8 acres is immediately west of the Pearson International Airport and south of Derry Road in Mississauga. It is owned jointly by three associations, the Canadian Masonry Contractors Association, the Ontario Masonry Contractors Association and the Metro Industrial & Commercial Masonry Contractors Inc.
The new building committee includes a masonry contractor representative from each of the three associations, a Canada Masonry Centre staff representative and two architects from the Toronto Society of Architects.
A necklace of naturally preserved mountain parks ring the Phoenix metropolitan area bringing Valley visitors and residents into close touch with the Sonoran Desert.
Update Insurance Book
Publication of a new, completely updated Sixth Edition of the popular paperback, Insurance for Contractors by Walter T. Derk has just been announced.
Written in plain language, the new 150 page book is aimed at owners, architects, engineers, general contractors, construction managers, prime and subcontractors, their attorneys and insurance brokers or representatives, incorporating myriad changes in liability policy forms since 1981.
Using 28 examples to illustrate points made in a text deliberately kept simple, the author also introduces entirely new subject matter, including General Aggregate Limit considerations and practical advice about Claims-Made versus Occurence policy forms.
Derk retires on July 1, 1989 as Executive Vice President of James Group Service, Inc., a James Company, one of the world's largest insurance brokerage firms. A widely recognized construction specialist, he will continue in private practice.
