Do They Push Your Buttons?

IN A JUST published book, authors Albert Ellis and Arthur Lange identify "nutty beliefs that we use to let people and situations needlessly push our buttons." Examples:

* I worry a lot about what other people think of me. Upshot: By doing this, you create a strong fear of rejection.

* I must not fail at important tasks. If I do, it's terrible. Upshot: This leads to avoiding challenging situations.

* People and things should always turn out the way I want them to and if they don't, it's horrible.

* If any of the first three bad events happens and I'm not liked or respected or if I fail, always blame somebody for it.

* If I worry obsessively about some upcoming event or how someone really feels about me, things will turn out better. I will probably persist in dwelling on all the "what ifs" and "shoulds."

* Perfect solutions exist for every problem, and I must find them and immediately. Suggestions: Don't wait for the perfect solution because indecision will cause even greater problems.

* It's easier to avoid difficult situations than to face them.

* If I never get seriously involved in anything and maintain a detached perspective, I will never be unhappy. I'll go through life with a "Yes, but" attitude.
