# MASONRY ALLIANCE FOR CODES AND STANDARDS MEETS IN WASHINGTON, DC
On March 14th and 15th, the Masonry Alliance for Codes and Standards (MACS) met in Washington DC at the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA). This was the first MACS meeting since the selection of the new executive board. The President is Charles Clark of the National Concrete Masonry Association (NCMA), the Vice-President is Mark Kluver of the Portland Cement Association (PCA), the Secretary is Waseem Kahn of the Brick Industry Association (BIA), and the Treasurer is Tom Wimp of the Kentuckiana Masonry Institute. MACS consist of over The majority of the time was spent tracking the progress of the MACS submitted code changes to the International Building Code (IBC) and the International Residential Code (IRC). The IBC is finishing its current code cycle for the 2003 International Codes; therefore it was critical that these changes be made soon. It was also decided at this meeting which code changes submitted by other organizations MACS would either support or oppose. Other topics of discussion included the OSHA steel erection standard.

The Masonry Society (TMS) decided over a year ago, that they would enter the code arena in order to support the reference of all TMS Standards, including the ACI 530/TMS 602/ASCE 5 Masonry Standards Joint Committee Code (MSJC). This decision has sparked quite a bit of debate over the past year and this meeting was no different. Mr. Phillip Samblanet, the Executive Director of TMS, came to the MACS meeting in order to share and exchange information concerning TMS's position on code changes. When Mr. Samblanet mentioned that there might be times when TMS may be opposed to MACS on some code changes that were not consistent with the MSJC, the members of MACS were upset. There was considerable conversation about this possible public division of the masonry industry on the ICC Code floor. Some felt as though there should never be any instance where there should be a public division of the industry. TMS held the position of consistency. They felt as though if they were to stand in opposition to some MSJC challenges and not all, their integrity may be questioned. This debate is one that was not resolved at this meeting, however, both sides agreed to continue to work together when working on the ICC Codes.
