On Feb. 19, 2005, the Maplewood Career Center held its first annual Ohio High School Masonry Competition. The Director of the competition, Rich Nagy, said the main goal of this competition was to help prepare the qualified students for the state competition in Columbus in April 2005.
The event had a good turnout with students from career centers located all over Ohio. The contestants were divided into two groups, the seniors and the juniors. Each group had three hours to complete the project, which consisted of a brick veneer block wall approximately 4' wide by 4' tall with different color brick patterns that were to be followed.
The students' projects were judged on many factors such as plumb, square, speed, quality, workmanship and measurement accuracy. Prize money awards were given to the top three scores in each group. Prize winners are as follows.
Juniors
1st Place: David Hay, Maplewood Career Center
2nd Place: Cody Jones, Scioto County JVS
3rd Place: Bobby Dailey, Tri-Rivers Career Center
Seniors
1st Place: Josh Moser, Maplewood Career Center
2nd Place: Brandon Rouse, South East Career Center
3rd Place: Ryan Schiefer, Pioneer Career Center
When the competition was over, vendors and representatives of the masonry industry handed out free masonry tools to all of the students who were in the competition. The Ohio High School Masonry Competition turned out to be a huge success.
Nagy thanks the following companies and organizations for their help and continued support with this competition and the Maplewood Career Center Masonry Program in general: Masonry Contractors Association of Akron and Vicinity, Ohio Concrete Masonry Co., Lafarge Mortar Co., Schory Masonry Co., Akron Brick and Block and Tucker Supply Co.
