Report of the MCAA TEAM Awards Committee

Words: Bill Dentinger, Malcolm Holzman, Tom Daniel, Dick MatthewsThe TEAM Awards Committee (formerly Excellence in Masonry) held its first TEAM Awards Banquet on Monday, January 17th at the Wynn in Las Vegas, NV. This committee has held at least monthly meetings via Conference Call since the meeting at the 2010 Mid Year Meeting. In these meetings, the following decisions and actions have occurred:

Goal of TEAM Awards Committee

To plan and carry out a successful TEAM Awards competition and awards ceremony to promote the masonry industry and recognize award winning architects, general contractors, mason contractors, owners, and associate members.

TEAM Awards Entries

This year we received 73 entries. We were very pleased with the participation. We hope to have more participation in next year’s competition as well. We are considering allowing projects that were entered in the 2010-2011 competition to be automatically enrolled in the 2011-2012 competition, if they are still eligible and pay a reprocessing fee.

TEAM Awards Judging

The judging panel for this year’s TEAM Awards was formed of the following Past Presidents:
  • Tom Daniel
  • Bill Dentinger
  • Dick Matthews
The names of projects and project participants were removed to keep the judging process fair. Judges cannot have projects in this contest. We were very grateful for their help in this process. They had a lot of great suggestions for how to make the contest and judging process better. The committee will be taking these suggestions into consideration for next year.

Awards were announced at the TEAM Awards Banquet on Monday, January 17, 2011. The actual awards were sent directly to each mason contractor to distribute to the architect, General Contractor, owner, and suppliers due to the large size and weight of these awards.

Vision Awards

The Vision Awards celebrate school districts, universities, communities, and architects who have demonstrated outstanding use of masonry in their projects and incorporate masonry in their campuses, communities, and buildings. The following were the winners of the 2011 Vision Awards, which were presented at the TEAM Awards on Monday, January 17, 2011:
  • Architect: Malcolm Holzman of Holzman Moss Bottino Architecture
  • Community: Kyle, TX
  • School District: Humble Independent School District
  • University: University of Texas

Year Ahead

The TEAM Awards Committee will continue to redevelop and revitalize the TEAM Awards into a successful competition and awards ceremony to promote the masonry industry and recognize award winning architects, general contractors, mason contractors, owners, and associate members.

The Committee is committed to making this event a success for the MCAA. We will be evaluating the following for next year’s event:
  • Date, Time, and Location of the TEAM Awards Banquet
  • Categories
  • Funding
  • Adding an “Lifetime Award” as suggested by the executive board
